About US

“I strive for every day to be better than the last. Not only for the future of my company, my channel, my brand... but for my son. My boy is my world. I want to give him a legacy he can be proud of. Not a legacy of money or possessions, but rather a legacy of memories, skills, values and happiness.

That is who I am.

THAT….. is who Bottlecap Barbeque is.”

Once upon a time…

There I was, looking for the next hobby to spend some time with and throw some money at. I got word of a BBQ Competition being hosted by AZBarbeque in the Phoenix area. Not only that, but they were gathering a team comprised of newbies to train and show then the ways of competition BBQ. Needless to say I jumped at the chance. And as they say, the rest is history.

Not even a month later another competition was being held down in Tucson. I knew there had to be some way to get down there. I made a call out to the AZBarbeque club, asking if anyone would mind if I just tagged along and helped them out somehow. Not sure what I was expecting, but I can promise you I was NOT expecting what was offered. Sterling Smith of Loot-n-Booty BBQ reached out and said I could join him. To tell you i was thrilled would be an understatement. Not only was I helping him do the random small tasks during the comp, but he proceeded to teach and show me things people fly thousands of miles and pay hundreds of dollars to even get a glimpse of! I will always be truly humbled and thankful for Sterling.

In a nutshell, the BBQ community that I had stumbled upon would change my life forever. Not only did I find my true passion, but I have been gifted the best circle of friends anyone could ever ask for.

A few short months later I was entered in my first, solo competition; this time a KCBS. If you know anything about competition BBQ, you know how much work it is. And even if you don’t know about competitions, imagine having to cook 4 different types of meat to perfection and turn them in for judging within an exact 10-minute time frame. Sound easy? Sure, for a steak and some chicken maybe. But you have to figure out how to cook a brisket, a pork butt, pork ribs and chicken; not only that but make sure these 2 - 10 hour cook time meats are done within a 10 minute window! And now factor in I was smart enough to do this BY MYSELF! Yes, I am that kind of crazy, and I have been loving every second of it. As for results of the competition…. I had fun and learned some lessons. I’ll leave it at that. But for the first time Bottlecap Barbeque showed up on the field, I found my home.

The life changing continued 3 months later. In August of 2018 the Bottlecap Barbeque YouTube channel was started. This has been a labor of love ever since. If you are a consumer of cooking videos on YouTube, there is no way of explaining how much time and effort goes into those things. A 20 minute meal takes an hour to shoot a video of because of all the camera angles, mumbling your words to yourself in the camera, then the hour+ of editing and posting the video. Yet again, something I have found that I really enjoy. Not only that, but I am hopefully that my little boy will be joining me more in them and will appreciate having a library of recipes from his old man years down the road.
